“I love to go on the road and play music for people and express myself, but for it to be something where I’m out there to make money, that’s depressing to me. You end up beating yourself up. Who gives a s–t how much money you have if your back hurts so much you can’t stand up. Money’s not the goal. Having fun making the art, that’s the goal. Finding a nice, happy medium. Being healthy and still expressing what you need to express in an effective way, that’s the ideal.”—
I get really sad sometimes when I talk to or read comments from other MJK fans. I think a lot of people (and really this could be said for any musician) view him as just a machine that makes amazing music. He’s a person, and yes he makes absolutely wonderful music, but he gets tired. Anyone would. You play two hour shows what… five, six times a week? In almost any weather condition? When I saw APC in July, it was freaking hot outside. I can’t even imagine how hot they were on stage under all the lights and fog machines. Plus it puts a real strain on your voice and probably mind as well. Surrounded by screaming people, never home… I thought the crowd at APC was extremely disrespectful when they didn’t play Judith. I mean… boo’s? I have a lot of respect for MJK, and the other members of Tool and other bands. They put up with a lot of shit.
